  New York City is one of the most popular cities throughout the entire United States. With an estimated population of 8.5 million people as of 2017 and covering over an estimated  302.6 square miles, New York City has the highest population density in America. Founded in 1624, this city is located at the southern tip of New York and borders the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean. It has five different boroughs with each being a separate county. Its five boroughs: Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island merged into New York City in 1898. Over time, New York City has grown to be one of the most popularly visited cities because of its many tourist attractions.

       The Empire State Building is one of the reasons why millions of tourists flood into New York City every year. Built in 1930, this 102 floor Art Deco skyscraper was designed by Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon. Currently, this massive skyscraper towers over Midtown Manhattan at a roof height of 1,250 feet. However, its owners were not able to make a profit out of this massive building until the 1950s. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City. About 4 million tourists visitors every year to its 86th and 102nd-floor observatories to get a spectacular view of NYC from over 1,000 feet up.

         New York CIty’s Central Park is another reason why millions of tourists visit  NYC every year. This urban park in Manhattan, New York City, is roughly 843 acres. However, it was established in 1857 with only 778 acres of land. The park is considered to be Manhattan’s most famous park with 35 million people visiting annually. It is also is the most visited urban park in the United States. Central Park is full of trees, rolling meadows, arches, sculptures, statues, etc. One of its most famous aspects is its Bethesda Terrace and Fountain which is in the heart of Central Park and has been featured in countless movie films. For tourists and even locals, Central Park is one of New York City’s must-see attractions.

        On September 11, 2001, New York City had the worst attack in its history. 19 militants hijacked four planes and crashed them into different locations. 2 of the planes crashed into the Twin Towers, a third struck the Pentagon outside of D.C, and a fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed in the incident, questioning the presidency of George W. Bush. Today, there is a memorial and a museum honoring the tragic event that happened in New York City on that day. Two square reflecting pools were built where the Twin Towers stood. Later, the museum was dedicated on May 15, 2014, with remarks from President Obama. 4 million people come to the memorial and museum each year to honor the tragic event that had happened.

       New York City’s most famous and tourist famous landmark is the Statue of Liberty. This copper statue was built by the people of France and was dedicated to the United States on October 28, 1886. The colossal statue was sculpted by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The framework of the statue was designed by French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the same man that designed the Eiffel Tower. The Statue of Liberty is a statue of a Roman goddess, representing Libertas, a roman liberty goddess. Today, because of oxidation, a natural weathering process, the statue is a pale green color. The pedestal stands at 154 feet high, making the top of the Statue of Liberty’s torch about 305 feet above the ground. Although only 3.5 million people, the lowest on the list, visit this statue, it is the most popularly known attraction in New York City.

          New York City attracts millions of tourists every year because of its many tourist attractions. Being an outstanding city filled with beautiful landmarks and an excellent view, New York City is a must-visit vacation destination.
