Most people who watch sports probably know who Russell Westbrook is. He is one of the best players in the NBA and has been breaking records his entire career. But the most greatest achievement of his career so far, was when he made triple-double history, and then crushed the Denver Nuggets’ playoff hopes. A triple-double is when a player has double digits in three stat categories. For example, one player scored 30 points, passed 10 assists, and grabbed 12 rebounds. What is even better though, is that Russell Westbrook averages a triple-double. That means that the average of his points, rebounds, and assists are all in the double digits. Westbrook is one of the best players in the entire NBA and the records he has broken.

Westbrook has always been a competitive type of person. He once said, “My motto is “Why Not?” and I always stick by it.” Before in high school, as a 5’8 point guard, he attracted little attention to the colleges. After suffering a personal loss of his teammate Khelcey Barrs died after a pickup game due to severe chest pains, Westbrook began to work on his game and show that he is truly is a candidate for college basketball. After undergoing a major growth spurt, he suddenly became one of the best recruits for colleges. He made it to the prestigious college of UCLA and was paired up with another future NBA stars Darren Collison and Kevin Love. Westbrook and his teammates took UCLA all the way to the Final Four to lose against Florida in 2007 and Memphis in 2008. After that he decided to skip the last two years of his college and entered the NBA draft.

He was chosen 4th overall to the Seattle Supersonics with All-Star Kevin Durant. After he was recruited they changed locations to Oklahoma City and was named the Oklahoma City Thunder. Westbrook showed the NBA his true potential. In his rookie year he was chosen as the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year. He continued to break records later on in his career like when he became the second player to have 30 points, 17 assists, 11 rebounds and 4 steals in a game. Or the time when he had back-to-back 40+ point triple-doubles, becoming the third player behind Michael Jordan and Pete Maravich.

But now, the biggest record that he took down was when he broke the record amount of triple-doubles in one season. The previous record holder was Oscar Robertson known as the Big O. In the 1961-62 season he had 41 triple-doubles. Now in the 2016-17 season, Russell Westbrook had 42 triple-doubles, eclipsing the Big O and taking home the record and the fame. Another one of the famous quotes from Westbrook is, “Pure adrenaline, emotions running high, game-winning shot, it is something you dream about as a little kid to be able to do that on the road especially from that distance,” “It is something you definitely will never forget.” Fellow KMS student Ethan C, says, “Westbrook should be the one who receives the MVP award.” Now Westbrook is a potential MVP candidate for the NBA and will probably go on to break even more records and going down the NBA record books.
