1. Soccer- In terms of fans, soccer is clearly the most popular sport in the world. It is estimated that about 3.5 billion fans watch and play soccer worldwide. The FIFA World Cup, a soccer tournament held every four years, has billions of viewers each year. According to Kraemer student, Julian G., “Soccer is really fun and all in all a great sport.” Soccer, sometimes known as football, is popular and loved in almost every region, especially in Europe, Africa, Asia, and America.


2.Cricket- With about 2.5 billion fans, cricket is estimated to be the second most popular sport. Especially enjoyed in Australia, Asia, and the United Kingdom, cricket has a long, rich history. Although the origins of cricket is unknown, it was often played starting from the 1550s. By the 1900s, cricket was well known all across the world and had many tournaments.


3.Field Hockey- The popularity of field hockey is increasing, making it third on the list for the most popular sport. It is estimated that field hockey is enjoyed by about 2 million fans. Field hockey is most often played in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Since its creation, field hockey has had numerous tournaments and fans.


4.Tennis- Being a wonderful pastime, tennis is considered the fourth most popular sport. With about one billion fans, tennis is most often played in Europe, Asia, and America. Ever since then, tennis has gained an infinite amount of followers.


5.Volleyball- Volleyball is known to be the fifth most popular sport in the world. Created only four years after basketball, volleyball was originally known as “Mintonette”. However, after seeing the multiple volleys during the game, a spectator changed the name to volleyball. Either way, volleyball is often enjoyed all around the world, especially in Europe, Australia, Asia, and America. It also has about 900 million fans.


6.Table Tennis- Having 850 million fans, table tennis is the sixth most popular sport in the world. Like volleyball, table tennis, a sport originally played by the wealthy, was known as a different name. Until someone believed table tennis should have a more serious name, table tennis was known as “Whiff-Whaff”. Table tennis now participants in many sporting events including the Olympics. It is most often played in Europe, Asia, America, and Africa.


7.Baseball- Baseball, the national sport of the United States, is the 7th most popular sport in the world. Although its popularity has grown dramatically in parts of Europe throughout the last few decades, baseball is followed by 500 million fans and is most popular in America and Japan. Today, baseball is loved and cherished all around the world.


8.Golf- Being the sport of the wealthy, golf is the eighth most popular sport in the world. Today, golf has become widely popular in many western countries, particularly in Europe and North America. Because it has more than half of the thirty-five thousand golf courses that exist in the world, the United States is the best place to play this amazing sport.


9.Basketball- With 400 million fans, basketball wins ninth place from the top ten most popular sports. However, the popularity of basketball has been increasing and is expected to have a booming number of fans in the future. Basketball, most well known in America, became extremely popular in the 1920’s. During this time period, countless professional teams were founded, eventually leading into the multiple basketball competitions and tournaments today.


10.American Football- Having 390 million fans, American football is known as the tenth most popular sport in the world. American football is popular in every region. Although American football doesn’t have much of a long history, it still has numerous professional games that are loved globally. For example, the Super Bowl, the annual football game of the National Football League, is one of the most viewed sporting events in the world.
