The SONY Hack of ‘14

It’s the hack that’s now gone wild. 100 terrabytes of data was stolen from Sony Pictures. Embarrassing emails were exposed! Celebrity secrets were revealed! More than 37,000 social security numbers have been stolen!

Sony was secretly hacked a week before Thanksgiving by a group of hackers who call themselves “The Guardians of Peace,” or #GOP.  It wasn’t found out until employees arrived at Sony Pictures for work when they were greeted  by a threatening message on all of their computers on Nov. 24 saying that they had been hacked, and that if their requests were not met, they would release stolen data to the world.

Later, on Dec. 5, Sony employees were greeted with another message, this time via email, saying “your family will be in danger.” This lead to more leaked information to be released on the internet.

Kraemer student Makayla D. says, “I feel like Sony has been hit very badly by North Korea and it is good they found out it was them.”

Three days later after the threatening email, the hackers reappeared by posting a public message on all computers demanding that the company censored itself. It warned Sony to “stop immediately showing the movie of terrorism which can break the regional peace and cause the War!” The post caused more data to be exposed on the internet.

Recently, #GOP posted a message on a website. Although the message has been long deleted from the website, there was a saved version of the message. It said, ”We are preparing for you a Christmas gift. The gift will be larger quantities of data. And it will be more interesting. The gift will surely give you much more pleasure and put Sony Pictures into the worst state.” The message says that more stolen data will be released from Sony on Christmas.

Another message states, ”The world will be full of fear. Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep the places at that time.”

Many believe that there is a reason for this heinous crime. There is also confirmation on who and where it’s coming from.

Yes, the “Guardians of Peace” did do it, but after further investigation, investigators found the hacking software was coded in Korean. Many other signs point to why and where this hack was from. If you have heard of “The Interview” starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, you know that it’s a movie about killing the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un. Also, the North Korean government calls the hack “a righteous deed.” It was confirmed North Korea did it on Dec. 19

After everything that’s happened, many believe it will take more than a year for Sony to recover from this horrendous hack.
