Actors Who Are Activists

Actor Angelina Jolie is a powerful activist

From singers to actors, there are many celebrities who are strong activists and work to make a difference in the world. Using their fame for good, Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie stand in the spotlight when it comes to stars lending their voice toward an important cause.

One of the most renowned faces in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie, has been actively working with 27 organizations around the world, using her status to make a change for the better. She worked to save the bees and empower women and was named the “Godmother” of the Women for Bees initiative launched by UNESCO, which trains women across the world to be beekeepers. The Oscar winner has spent almost two decades working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She traveled to Sierra Leone, Iraq, Thailand, and more in order to help find solutions for people who were forced to flee their homes.

In 2012, Jolie became a special envoy to the UNHCR and has since continued her work with refugee populations. She is also a primary supporter of the Alliance for the Lost Boys, which provides medical coverage, education, and school supplies for the Lost Boys of Sudan and their families. Adding on to the list, she fights against sexual violence, is a conservationist, fights for orphaned and abandoned children (adopting three of her own), supports the Black Lives Matter movement, and has started a humanitarian foundation.

Best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Emma Watson puts the “act” in activist. A graduate of Brown University, she was appointed UN Woman Goodwill ambassador in July 2014 and HeForShe spokesperson for promoting gender equality. She’s given many speeches around the globe talking about women’s political participation, education for young girls, and female empowerment in countries like Bangladesh and Uruguay. She has said, “Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong.” The actor also launched the COPBookFairies event, where she hid more than 40 books regarding climate change around Glasglow. Her activism led her to awards like “Woman of the Year” by GQ magazine in 2013, a feature on Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people in 2015, and in 2017 she was named “Inspirational Woman of the Year.”

As celebrities with a great amount of influence, Emma Watson’s and Angelina Jolie’s activism towards important causes are deeds worthy of approval.
