The Ghostbusters Franchise

The Ectomobile is the iconic vehicle the featured in all of the Ghostbuster movies.

Ghosts are considered myths and fake spooky characters in stories because people don’t know if they actually exist and haunt houses and neighborhoods, but that is because some of them are invisible and unpredictable. When a horde of evil spirits, ghouls, and ghosts come down to earth from another world, only four people can stop it and save earth. But who are they? They’re the Ghostbusters.

The first film of Ghostbusters was released on June 8, 1984. It was a big hit when it first came out in theaters. Ghostbusters made about $36.6 million in its first week. The film stars Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd as Dr. Ray Stantz, and Harold Ramis as Dr. Egon Spengler. These three characters are the main Ghostbusters that have dedicated their lives to studying paranormal activity. But later in the movie, another joins the group of ghostbusting scientists. Although Winston Zeddemore, the fourth member of the Ghostbusters (played by Ernie Hudson), isn’t a scientist, he is an important part of the group. Together, they find weird happenings, strange noises, and scary evil spirits. The Ghostbusters ride through the city in a 1959 Cadillac ambulance, and use their iconic proton packs, machines they carry on their backs that shoot proton beams to hold ghosts, and ghost traps, box-like traps, to trap ghosts, which were all made by Egon Spengler. In the end, they defeat an ancient evil god named Gozer and save New York and the whole world from ghosts, goblins, and evil spirits.

GhostbustersⅡ is a sequel to the first film, which was released on June 16, 1989. Since it is a sequel, the main characters are played by the same actors, but the problem in the movie is different. The Ghostbusters get out of business and are separated. After being separated, even more strange things happen in New York City, and the group gets back together again. Unusual things happen all around the city, and there’s more slime coming. The ghost-exterminating guys will have to save earth from ghosts…again.

Many years after the GhostbustersⅡ film was released, there came along a new version of the Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call was released on July 11, 2016, which is set about 32 years from the Ghostbusters sequel. The movie stars Melissa McCarthy as Dr. Abby Yates, Kristen Wiig as Dr. Erin Gilbert, Kate McKinnon as Dr. Jillian Holtzman, and Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan. The movie’s plot is a bit similar to the first original Ghostbusters film, yet very different. When a university professor named Erin Gilbert is fired because of being seen in a video with her friends, Abby Yates and Jillian Holtzman, seeing a ghost, she volunteers to help them catch and study ghosts. They hire a fourth member into the group throughout the film, discover who has been unleashing ghosts and save the world from catastrophic disasters with ghosts.

The disgusting, scary fun doesn’t end there. In fact, just last year, a new Ghostbusters film was released in theaters. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise. It was released on November 19, 2021, which means that the movie’s time of setting takes place about forty years after the ghost apocalypse of New York in 1984. The Ghostbusters haven’t busted a ghost in so many years, and people started caring less about evil spirits until they forgot they were real. But when a single mother of two children goes broke, she has nothing and nowhere else to go except an old farm that belonged to her father. So Callie, the single mom (Carrie Coon), and her two kids, Phoebe (McKenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), move into the house. Little by little, the kids discover that their grandfather was a Ghostbuster known as Egon Spengler. Once they learn that another ghost apocalypse will come, they, plus two other friends (Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor) become the new Ghostbusters.

The supernatural comedy franchise is worth watching and worth everybody’s time. These films are hilarious and combined with a thrilling touch that everyone loves. Ghostbusters are the right exterminators to call, if anyone sees a ghost or if anyone needs a good laugh and scare.
