Following the successful Harry Potter franchise, the Wizarding World appeared to have come to a close. Voldemort was defeated, and the heroes have grown up. After The Cursed Child,  a stage play, was produced, it truly seemed like the end of the saga. Harry Potter was now to be regarded as a classic, and an outstanding movie and book series. However, in 2016, much to the excitement, glee, and shock of fans, the start of a new Wizarding World franchise was released.

In 2016, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them came out in theaters. This story takes place decades before Harry Potter, in the early 1900s. Following the first film, a second came out: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Both movies were fairly popular at the box office. Fantastic Beasts is a story following magizoologist (magical zoologist) Newt Scamander in America, where numerous adventures ensue. Along the way, he encounters and befriends numerous individuals. These include witches Tina and Queenie Goldstein, as well as Jacob Kowalski, a muggle, or an ordinary, non-magical human. Who is the main antagonist of the story? Gellert Grindelwald, the dark lord before the infamous Lord Voldemort. To add on, audiences were able to have the treat of seeing young Albus Dumbledore, a staple of the Harry Potter series. On April 15, 2022, the third film in the Fantastic Beasts series was released. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Looking past its mixed reviews from the audience and low box office score ($43 million), Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is a charming and entertaining movie.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore follows the events of its preceding movie, The Crimes of Grindelwald. In the previous film, Grindelwald, the dark wizard of the era, rose to power, effectively terrifying the globe. His immoral beliefs in magic and non-magic users led many wizards and witches to join his movements. The Secrets of Dumbledore follows this event, with the premise of the movie to prevent Grindelwald from causing any more harm in the world. Albus Dumbledore, the greatest wizard in the world, serves as a key factor in the mission for Grindelwald’s defeat. A two hour and 23-minute movie filled with danger, corruption, love, regrets, magical creatures, a controversial election, returning characters, and new faces, The Secrets of Dumbledore was a satisfying movie from beginning to end.

Although the box office scores may look bad at first sight, the movie itself isn’t entirely upsetting, looking past some of its issues. The characters, new and old, were enjoyable to watch, with the actors portraying the roles extremely well. Not only that, but the relationships, bonds, and ties between the characters felt authentic, another one of the actors’ successes. The visuals and animation were breathtaking, especially when it came to the display of magic. Amongst some flaws here and there, such as less screen time for significant characters or a slightly underwhelming ending, The Secrets of Dumbledore was a pleasant movie.

It’s true that the Fantastic Beasts franchise may not have the same touch of magic as Harry Potter did. However, The Secrets of Dumbledore, flaws aside, is a satisfying movie even with its flaws. Because of the success of this film, many more Fantastic Beasts movies may continue to arrive for years to come.
