Energy is a very big part of everyone’s life, whether for cooking, cleaning, or just entertainment. The U.S., along with many other nations, uses many different sources of energy, but fossil fuel is one of the most common in America. Although fossil fuels do have some benefits, they also cause a lot of problems and are not great solutions in the long run. Fossil fuels create greenhouse gas emissions that contribute greatly to our world’s pollution, and it’s not renewable. Since we can’t replicate its original source, once all of it is used up, it’s gone forever. That is why we’ve come up with different ways to create energy, like solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and most importantly, hydroelectric energy. Although there are others, hydroelectric energy is the best source of energy because it’s inexpensive, it produces a pollution-free alternative while also keeping wildlife safe, and there is lots of unused space to produce energy.

Out of all of the renewable energy sources, hydroelectricity makes up about 7-8 percent of the total energy produced in America, which is more than any other. As a result of this cheap energy source, hydropower tends to attract large industries that need vast amounts of energy to operate. With more and more people wanting to use hydropower, it helps them maintain a high amount of energy at a low cost. It also helps the environment with a clean and pollution-free way of creating energy. Using hydroelectricity as our main source of energy will also diminish fuel price stocks and create a more affordable source of energy for everybody. If everyone switched to electric cars – which many have but not all – fuel prices would noticeably go down, and so would the amount of greenhouse gasses that would’ve otherwise been produced.

As stated before, one of the main problems with fossil fuels is that they create a ton of greenhouse gas emissions that are not only extremely harmful for the environment but for animal habitats too. With hydropower, engineers and scientists are continually able to improve the efficiency and safety of the turbines that create the energy and other technologies too. One of the main problems with creating dams and turbines that hold and produce energy is the effect that it has on wildlife. Many dams do create a problem for traveling fish, but that doesn’t mean all of them do. Many engineers who have created these hydropower sources also look at how to improve them to offer a more fish-friendly design. Now, hydropower projects that provide maximum efficiency while also reducing environmental impacts have started gaining support from environmentalists and the government, which has started doing something about all of the water that is not being used and could be.

Throughout the U.S., there are about 80,000 dams that hold so much water, which could easily produce hydropower, but for some reason, they don’t. Only about 3 percent of all of the dams produce hydropower which isn’t a lot at all. Many waterways are not used and could easily be put to use by adding a couple of turbines, and that’s not even talking about dams. If dams already hold the water, there is no point in not using it to create energy that is clean, very available, and cheap. Even if the hydropower is not being used on a large scale, even using smaller turbines can produce enough electricity for a home, farm, or ranch, and even though it doesn’t seem like much, it still reduces pollution.

There are many different renewable energy sources, but hydroelectricity is the best way to go. Hydroelectricity is cheap, a pollution-free alternative, and fish-friendly, and there’s a ton of unused space that could be used for hydropower. Hydroelectricity would create energy that is cheaper than most when building, and it would also lessen prices for consumers. Pollution in our world is a big problem, but turning to hydropower would create a renewable source of energy that is completely clean. Over the whole U.S., although there are some negative impacts, the positive things that come with creating hydroelectricity definitely outweigh the negatives.
