Maple Syrup Cola

New soda flavors have been progressively getting wackier and weirder; take the bacon and grass flavored sodas for example. While these might have been a shock in the culinary world a few mere years ago, these flavors have become more common. Another unusual flavored soda that recently came into the spotlight is the new Pepsi Maple Syrup Cola, a result of the partnership between Pepsi and IHOP, a famous pancake house restaurant chain. Though some consumers are skeptical of how good the product will actually taste, others are excited about the ultimate reveal and were eagerly participating for a chance to win the highly-anticipated cola.

In order to obtain one of these sodas, 2,000 passionate individuals participated in the “Show Your Stack” social media challenge on Twitter or Instagram. All contestants had to be at least 18 years old and a U.S. resident. One also had to follow Pepsi, use the tags #ShowUsYourStack and #PepsiSweepstakes, and tag @IHOP. In addition, they were required to post photos or videos of their pancake stack to be considered. And finally, only one fortunate winner is lucky enough to receive a custom Pepsi Spout modeled after IHOP’s pitcher. Though the challenge already ended on March 29, 2022, the U.S. is still buzzing with suspense over what the soda will actually taste like.

In a statement, Chief Marketing officer Todd Kaplan commented, “There is truly nothing like the indulgent taste of Pepsi Maple Syrup Cola – sweet maple syrup blended with the refreshing taste of Pepsi cola. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with IHOP on this special initiative, as it isn’t often we get to bring together two iconic brands to satisfy the cravings of pancake and Pepsi lovers alike. We can’t wait to celebrate those who have an unapologetic love of pancakes by giving the limited-edition cans to 2,000 fans who #ShowUsYourStack online.” Pepsi has also released other bizarre flavors of soda before in collaboration with other food companies. These include an apple pie flavor in 2020, followed by hot chocolate, Cracker Jack popcorn, and Peeps marshmallow flavors in 2021. And while some would prefer to not taste one of these colas, the limited-edition colas have sold for hundreds of dollars on online auction websites, like eBay.

The new maple syrup soda collaboration between Pepsi and IHOP may reflect the future of the soft drink industry. Soda companies are becoming more and more adventurous and taking more risks when creating their newest soda flavors, and this has both advantages and disadvantages. In a 2021 summer report, International Food Products, Inc. noted how consumers are eager for more fresh and new soda flavors while also seeking to reduce their sugar intake, so they are looking toward carbonated soft drinks companies to satisfy their needs. More reserved customers would simply prefer the original soft drinks, though even they are anticipating whatever eccentric flavors come out next.
