World Cup

Fifa was founded in 1904 to unite soccer associations around the world into one organization. They originally had seven nations part of Fifa: Belgium, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. This was to create more attention for soccer, as each country could promote the soccer organization. The countries had to keep friendly relationships with other countries to lower tension. They did this by promoting every level of soccer and taking control of every soccer organization. The sport grew as a result of them promoting it. Although there was already the Olympics, Fifa wanted to make their own worldwide competition. At this time in the world, athletes were not of high status and worked day jobs along with professional soccer.

After a long debate, Fifa decided to allow counties to pick local soccer players along with professional ones. The first world cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. Only 13 countries played in the first world cup, and at the end of the competition, Uruguay was the first world cup winner. The world cup trophy would be held in high honor for the contributions of the first Fifa president Jules Rimet. He retired after Brazil’s three world cup wins, and ever since then, Fifa has grown to over 3 billion watchers on average and streamed in over 150 countries.

Fifa recently released the draws of the 2022 world cup group stages. Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, and the Netherlands. Group B: England, Iran, USA, Ukraine/Scotland, and Wales.
