On February 24, 2022, England ended its quarantine rules. This was the law established during the surge of Covid-19, in which everyone had to stay in their homes unless they needed to go out for necessities. England also had a mandatory requirement to stay at home for at least five days if tested positive for Covid-19. The government also lifted that restriction starting on 2/24/2022. Therefore, the people who had to isolate at home due to the restrictions will now stop receiving financial support from the government due to the loss of revenue during the isolation period.
British prime minister Boris Johnson says that due to the lift of all the mandatory restrictions, the new strategy for Covid-19 in our daily lives is not legal restrictions but personal responsibility. Due to all the restrictions, Johnson states that the end of legal restrictions will be the end of the dreadful two years of living in quarantine and with restrictions and isolation. To prevent going through the safety restrictions again, England plans to administer free Covid testing starting from April 1, 2022. After hospitalization and infection rates fell, approximately around late December, face masks were no longer legally mandatory anywhere. Additionally, vaccine passes for entering nightclubs or other places, such as meetings and concerts, were no longer required. These changes were made not only in England, but in other European countries as well, such as Scotland and Ireland. Scotland ended their Covid vaccine document requirements, but many venues and restaurants can still choose to use it if they deem it as necessary. Many people are questioning why England has already lifted all of its restrictions. The government and the British Medical Association advised that this strategic plan would make it harder for vulnerable people in England. With these restrictions, many vulnerable people have gone through a strike, which resulted in a loss of income. Due to about “85% of people aged 12 and older” in the U.K. being already vaccinated and about “66%” already having their boosters, the Association believes that lifting restrictions wouldn’t lead to a big crisis.
Boris Johnson clearly states that “Covid is not over.” However, by ending these restrictions, people could relive the two years of the pandemic while still being aware of Covid. By the lifting of restrictions, Boris Johnson declared that this is not a victory over Covid, but that civilians could go back to living their lives normally, with full responsibility for how they dealt with the virus.
