On Sunday, January 2nd, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced the New York Jets at MetLife stadium. In the third quarter, the Buccaneers were trailing the Jets 24 to 10. Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians had asked Antonio Brown to go into the game, but Brown had refused. Arians asked Brown again, and he refused again. At this point, Arians told Brown to leave. Antonio Brown proceeded to take off his jersey, pads, and shirt. As he was leaving, he threw his gloves and shirt to the fans and started to wave, and walked across the end zone before finally exiting the stadium through the tunnel.

Tom Brady made a comeback and won the game 28 to 24 by making a 33-yard play to Cyril Grayson for a touchdown with 15 seconds left in the game. Sadly, Antonio Brown was fired by head coach Bruce Arians.

Brown’s abrupt departure couldn’t have been timed worse. If he had made eight more catches, 55 receiving yards, and one touchdown, he would have received $999,999 in bonus money.

Tom Brady, after the game said, “That’s obviously a difficult situation. I think we all want him to – I think everybody should find – hopefully, do what they can to help him in ways that he really needs it. We all love him and care about him deeply. We want to see him be at his best. Unfortunately, it won’t be on our team. We have a lot of friendships that will last … I think everyone should be very compassionate and empathetic toward some very difficult things that are happening.” Brady had been known to advocate for Brown before, and he asked everyone to have compassion towards Brown after his abrupt departure.

Antonio Brown has quite a history of personal conduct issues. Brown had a successful time with the Pittsburg Steelers, but in 2019 he expressed that he wanted to leave the Steelers. Brown was traded to the Oakland Raiders, but he never played a game for the Raiders. He had had a tirade at Mike Mayock, the general manager, and was kicked off the Raiders. He then was signed onto the New England Patriots, but after only playing one game for them, he was released because he had sent threatening messages to a woman who had accused him of sexual assault.

In January 2020, Antonio Brown was charged with felony burglary and two misdemeanors. Then in July of 2020, he was suspended for eight games because he had violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy. After Brown’s stunt and his history of misbehavior, it seems unlikely for any team to want to bring Brown onto their team.
