China’s $1 Trillion Artificial Sun

Imagine if someone was able to recreate the sun but 5x hotter? China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) successfully created an “artificial sun,” also known as the nuclear fusion reactor. However, this science experiment is not something new, as it has been over seven decades since scientists tried to achieve this. This experiment created a new world record of superheating a plasma loop to temperatures five times hotter than the sun for over 17 minutes straight and with a temperature that reached up to 158 million-degree Fahrenheit for 1056 seconds. Tore Supra Tokamak of France in 2003 achieved a similar record but within 390 seconds. What EASTachieved was a remarkable accomplishment that could change the world of technology and science.

Energy is not an unlimited source. Most of our energy comes from fossil fuels that can harm the environment; however, researchers at Gong Xianzu from the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences aimed to create a nuclear fusion reactor that can produce unlimited energy sources. They were able to achieve this by using deuterium, which is heavy hydrogen. This provides a constant stream of energy because it slows down neutrons and does not absorb them as much as hydrogen atoms. The world needs this kind of technology one day because people are using more energy than ever before, and through this, the world does not need to worry about exhausting all of the Earth’s energy and resources.

This experiment is very expensive and will cost China $1 trillion by the time the experiment is finished in June. Then, this test will be combined with bigger projects such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). This project is being built in Marseille, France, and it has 35 countries participating in building the project, such as the European Union, UK,  US, and China. Much more needs to be done, and with successful completion, it may provide the world with unlimited amounts of energy.

As the artificial sun was being built, France was the only country that was a part of this scientific experiment, and they have been successful. Recently, China successfully recreated the sun, but 5x hotter without France’s help. This could be considered one of the most significant accomplishments in science because it could change how the world uses its energy by providing an unlimited amount without using fossil fuels. This technology still needs to be improved by tests and experiments, but the future looks bright. This technology can help the environment and provide more energy for people throughout the world.
