The 2022 Oscars have many worthy nominees; they won’t disappoint.

After the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences publicized the 94th Oscars nominees, months of speculation were finally ended. Although debates over Oscar nominees might be over, debates over which films will be honored have started. There are many big titles, but a great variety of films were nominated. Ranging from documentaries to blockbusters, it is safe to say that this year’s Oscars won’t disappoint.

Starting off with one of the more well-known nominees, Spider-Man: No Way Home was nominated for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. Even with Marvel’s high standards, this movie was truly a phenomenal success. This film was Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man movie and notably featured the two actors who previously portrayed Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire.

Another Marvel movie that was nominated is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film was Marvel’s first movie that featured an Asian superhero as the main character. The movie starred Simu Liu as Shang-Chi and received a nomination for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

An animated film that was nominated is Encanto. It is a Disney movie that tells the story of a Colombian girl who lives with a family full of people with magical powers and is especially popular for its music. Many viewers were happy to see the Latino representation both in the songs and in the movie itself. The musical was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.

Joachim Trier’s Norwegian film, The Worst Person in the World, is a coming-of-age nominee. Though it may be foreign, it fits well within the American indie film tradition. It follows a young woman for four years as she struggles in finding herself while balancing an uncertain love life and career aspirations. It’s bittersweet and enjoyable and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.

Another Disney film that was nominated is Cruella. The movie serves as Cruella de Vil’s, from 101 Dalmations, origin story. The movie stars Emma Stone as Estella, who eventually becomes Cruella. The film was nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, which is not a surprise for anyone who has seen Emma Stone’s stunning looks in the movie.

Though these are only some of this year’s nominees, it shows that the films selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this year are worthy of their nominations.
