Stranger Things Show Review

Stranger Things is a 2016 Netflix Original Series created by The Duffer Brothers. There may be spoilers ahead! This mysterious and creepy show takes place in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the early 1980s. In the nearby Hawkins National Laboratory, scientists open a portal into another dimension for a research project directed by the United States Department of Energy. While this experiment is being performed, they are secretly doing their experiments on the portal. A supernatural creature abducts Will Byers from the alternate dimension soon to be called the Upside Down.

His mother and the local policeman Jim Hopper spend every waking moment searching for her son. Will’s friends, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin, search for Will on their own when they meet someone unexpected. They come across a young psychokinetic girl who escaped from the laboratory. She doesn’t have a name, but she does have a tattoo of the number 11, so they call her Eleven. Eleven helps them in their effort to find Will.

Unbeknownst to the town, a secret Soviet laboratory under Starcourt seeks to open the gateway to the Upside Down, allowing the creatures from the Upside Down to possess people in Hawkins and creating a new horror. Later in the show, while all of this is happening, Eleven reveals her feelings for Mike that have been forming throughout the show. Because Eleven doesn’t have a family, Jim Hopper takes her in as his daughter, eventually adopting her. When he catches wind of Eleven’s relationship with Mike, he becomes concerned for her. His concern grows to such an extreme that he threatens Mike into not spending any time with Eleven. After losing his daughter at a very young age to cancer, he wants to do everything in his power to protect Eleven. There is a lot of gore in this show, but many heartwarming and beautiful scenes are woven throughout the series.

The Stranger Things cast consists of Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbor as Jim Hopper, Sadie Sink as Max Hargrove, Dacre Montgomery as Billy Hargrove, Charlie Heaton as Jonathon Byers, Maya Hawk as Robin Buckley, Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler, Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair, Alec Utgoff as Dr. Alexie, Brett Gelman and Sean Astin as Bob Newby.

This is a great show for someone who enjoys mystery but is still up for a bit of romance and emotional content. Stranger Things has three seasons but is coming back for a 4th season, although that has been delayed because of Covid-19. Looking for a binge-worthy series, Stranger Things is a perfect candidate.
