Naomi Osaka: A 4 Time Grand Slam Champion

On February 20, 2021, Naomi Osaka won her fourth Grand Slam title at the 2021 Australian Open. Naomi currently plays as a Japanese on the tennis court, a decision her father helped her make. At a time, she had citizenships for both the United States and Japan. Naomi is not currently a United States citizen as she wanted to represent Japan in the Olympics. This 23-year-old works hard on and off the tennis court and continues to wow everyone.

Naomi Osaka was born in Japan on October 16, 1997. Her family includes her mother, Tamaki Osaka, her father, Leonard Francois, and her older sister, Mari Osaka. She currently uses her mother’s last name as her parents thought it would make it easier to live in Japan. Her family moved to the United States of America when she was three years old. Serena and Venus Williams’ father had inspired Naomi’s father to coach his children.  Both Naomi and her sister started to play tennis in Long Island before her family moved to Florida. Leonard Francois would coach the Osaka sisters during the day and, Tamaki Osaka would homeschool them at night.

Over the years, Naomi continued to play tennis before it finally paid off. In 2016, the Women’s Tennis Association, WTA, awarded her “Newcomer of the Year.” This tennis player continued to work hard and started to climb to the top. In 2018 she won a Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open. She became the first Japanese woman to win a tennis title that prestigious. Naomi kept on going and went on to win the Australian Open in 2019.

Naomi has had her fair share of difficulties. 2019 was a challenging year for this Japanese tennis player. She had to manage her knee injury and also switched coaches. She also had a tough time on the tennis court and had a disappointing match in Wimbledon. Osaka kept going and won the 2020 U.S. Open.

Osaka currently has 4 Grand Slam titles after winning the 2021 Australian Open. In the semi-finals, she beat Serena Williams 6-3 and 6-4. Naomi looked up to Serena as a child and has now beat her several times at tennis.  She beat Jennifer Brady 6-4 and 6-3. Every time Naomi Osaka has made it to the Grand Slam finals, she has won. Watch out for Naomi Osaka because she might be the next face of women’s professional tennis.
