4-year-old Girl Finds a Dinosaur Footprint

In Wales, London, a four-year-old girl made history. Lily Wilder made a fascinating discovery that had scientists excited.

Lily is a 4-year-old girl who went for a walk to the bay near her house and discovered this fossil. Lily’s family consists of her mother, Sally, father, Richard, and her 1-year-old brother, George. Lily’s mother has said that she has tried to make Lily go outside more often if possible because of the pandemic. This resulted in Lily going for a walk with her father and finding the fossil. According to her father, she was very excited when she found the fossil. Lily had always loved dinosaur TV-shows, models & toys. She said to NBC News that her favorite was the T-Rex. Her father took a picture of her and the fossil. They then shared the picture with their family when Lily’s grandmother told them to reach out to local fossil experts. Lily’s parents took this advice and gave it to local authorities.

When researchers came to the site, they said it was nearly impossible to confirm what type of ancient animal made this footprint. The only piece of information was that the dinosaur “stood about 75 centimeters (29.5 inches) tall and 2.5 meters (about 8 feet) long.” The specimen is also known as a “grallator.” Cindy Howells, a paleontology curator, said that they had never fully discovered the species and said that Lily’s discovery was a major breakthrough. This similar footprint was noted to be seen in the US before and had seemed to be made by a coelophysis. “It would have been a slender animal with a tail that walked on its two hind feet and actively hunted other small animals and insects,” quoted from Howells, and her research confirms that the fossil was a grallator. Many paleontologists, Howells included, said that the 220 million-year-old dinosaur fossil being this well preserved was “brilliant.”

The details of the foot joints and muscles were prominent in the footprint.

In the end, exploring and discovering are things anyone can do and can result in many extraordinary possibilities.
