Johnny Depp is one of the world’s top actors. He has worked on many famous films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Nightmare on Elm Street recently the second Fantastic Beasts movie. To many fans’ surprise, Johnny Depp was asked to resign by Warner Bros because of losing his very publicized libel case against Britain’s “The Sun” newspaper. The Sun claimed that Depp was violent and abusive to Amber Heard, causing Depp to sue for defamation. The newspaper’s lawyers argued that Depp “beat his wife Amber Heard, causing her to suffer significant injury, and on occasion leading to her fearing for her life,” citing photos, audio recordings, and text messages. Heard also told the court that Depp threatened to kill her many times. Depp admitted to having a drug issue but says that all of the other claims were completely false.
The Newspaper called Depp the name “Wife Beater,” which sparked most of the controversy. The judge focused on whether or not that’s true. One of the main points in Depp’s defense is that it was a “hoax” that she created in case the marriage broke down, but the judge shot back that her donation of $7 million to charity did not seem like the act of a gold-digger. Depp ended up losing the case, which is most likely going to lead to more debate. It might have been better for Depp to not pursue the case because not only does it give him a chance to lose, but it also puts his personal life and problems with alcohol and drugs in the eyes of the public.
This legal case led Warner Bros to ask Johnny Depp to resign from his role of Grindelwald. The controversy of Depp’s role had already started in 2016, around the time that Heard first accused Depp of being physically and emotionally abusive. This led a lot of people to frown upon Depp being cast as Grindelwald. Although she won the divorce case, Rowling was still very supportive of his role as Grindelwald. The director of Fantastic Beasts, David Yates, also said, “He’s full of decency and kindness, and that’s all I see. Whatever accusation was out there doesn’t tally with the kind of human being I’ve been working with.”
But now that he’s lost the case is it all over for Johnny Depp? Possibly, but he still has a chance. Recently discovered audio recordings seem to show that it was Amber Heard abusing Johnny Depp, and not the other way around. In addition to this evidence, some body-language analysts even think that Heard was making several lies during the trial. Depp has future plans to appeal this case.
