What is Diwali?

Diwali, also known as Dipawali, is the Indian festival of lights. This festival lasts five days and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. This is celebrated in many different ways by many different people. Diwali is celebrated once a year and has many different dates. When seen by others, the date might look random, but the date has a special meaning. It always occurs between October and November, but the Indian lunar calendar decides the date. Diwali happens during the month called Kartika, which is believed to be the holiest. The moon also decides the exact date of this event. Diwali always falls on a no moon day. It may seem odd because this is the darkest day of the month, and it is called the festival of lights. This is because Diwali represents good over evil and your inner good outshines all evil. Many people hang up lights and diyas to represent the good in times of darkness.

Some important parts of the celebration of Diwali are flowers, diyas, lights, rangolis, and torans. A diya is an oil lamp that is usually made from clay. People take a cotton piece and make it a wick and use different types of oil to light this lamp. A rangoli is a colorful pattern that is made on the floor using different dry powders. A toran is an Indian door hanging that has flowers, jewels, designs, beads, etc.

In different parts of India, the five days of Diwali are celebrated differently. These are the most common ways this festival is celebrated in North India. The first day is called Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. Many people shop for a metal such as gold or silver or a house product during this time. They also start to clean their houses. On the second day or Choti Diwali, people decorate their homes with diyas, rangolis, and torans. The third day is Diwali. Families celebrate this with a Lakshmi puja, which means they pray to Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, love, and beauty. This puja is followed by many desserts, firecrackers, the lighting of diyas, and much more. The fourth day is thought of as the beginning of the new year. People enjoy meeting friends and sharing best wishes and gifts. The last day is celebrated by a brother and sister. This is called Bhai Duj. The sister prays for blessings for her brother, while the brother says he will forever protect his sister. This is followed by a variety of sweets and a nice meal. The festival of Diwali is the most important festival for many people in India and around the world. There are many different types of celebrations for it and many different types of decorations.
