With the help of the Twitter account WeRateDogs, Narwhal’s popularity exploded. The Tweet about Narwhal has since gained 131,000 retweets and 619,000 likes. Unlike most dogs, Narwhal has two tails- with the second tail on his forehead.

Volunteers for an animal rescue located in Missouri found the 10-week-old puppy along with another dog in the cold early November with the beginnings of frostbite on a paw. The older dog, a Daschund Terrier mix, is speculated to be Narwhal’s father and was named Poppa Smurf. Narwhal was then brought to a nonprofit organization called Mac’s Mission. The frostbite healed, and this puppy got the name  “Narwhal the Little Magical Furry Unicorn.”

The nonprofit, Mac’s Mission, was named after one of the owner’s dogs. They specialize in special need dogs which are born with defects or have been abused. Some special needs cases include deformities, trauma, or any other thing that would cause the dog to be put down. Narwhal was one of the hundreds of dogs that are abandoned in rural Missouri.

Despite being named Narwhal, he doesn’t have a long protruding canine tooth that resembles a tusk. Instead, Narwhale has a short, soft, and stubby tail that is located between his eyes that flops around during movement. Narwhal also has a fully functioning tail like most dogs on his bottom.

A veterinarian gave Narwhal and checkup and X-ray. Results of the X-ray showed that the tail on the forehead had no bones. Even though the tail has no real use, it also doesn’t cause pain. It was decided the tail wasn’t removed as there wasn’t a medical reason. Narwhal is currently healthy, but genetic factors can play a major role in overall health, especially in special cases.

Figuring the cause of the second tail is near impossible. Narwhal was taken to a vet to examine his face tail. Conclusions of how the tail formed could have been by absorbing a twin in the womb or the tail forming randomly without an explanation.

People all over the United States offered to give the puppy a home. Even with 300, adoption applications Narwhal is staying with the rescue. A reason for this was because some applicants didn’t have the best intentions with the high-profile puppy. In addition, Narwhal’s forehead tail can be an issue if it has a growth spurt. However, adoption applications are likely going to be available after Narwhal has grown.
