Today, many people spend thousands of dollars on a procedure called cosmetic plastic surgery in the hope that they will appear more attractive. Plastic surgery is a certain type of surgery that can change somebody’s physical appearance or the ability to function. The two main types of plastic surgery are reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery helps fix birth deformities or injuries while cosmetic surgery reshapes certain body parts for aesthetic looks. While reconstructive surgery might be vital for a healthy and functional life, cosmetic surgery is completely voluntary and not a need.
Some of the most popular and common cosmetic procedures include breast augmentations, lip fillers, facelifts, tummy tucks, and hair transplantation. Many people who have cosmetic plastic surgery often dislike a certain part of their body and want to change it. They hope that it will help boost more confidence, help them fit in, and be more accepted in society. People who want plastic surgery may also have body dysmorphic disorder, a compulsive disorder where people are obsessed with all their imperfections and think about them all the time. As it may benefit plastic surgeons financially, people with this disorder may fall into depression and even become suicidal.
People are also influenced to undergo these surgeries by the many celebrities and social media influencers who often post their “perfect” bodies that promote plastic surgery. People like Kylie Jenner, Britney Spears, and Angelina Jolie have all altered some parts of their body influencing many of their fans to do the same. Younger generations are more likely to want and get plastic surgery than older people since they are more exposed to the internet and social media. Many people of the younger generation tend to glorify and respect celebrities and want to follow in their footsteps.
Unfortunately, studies have shown that getting cosmetic surgery does not boost self-confidence at all. Despite having more “accepted” features after the procedure, plastic surgery still will not satisfy somebody. Even though it will make them feel good, their happiness will not last in the long run. In fact, it might even make people feel even more depressed and insecure if they are unhappy with the outcome.
Overall, this cosmetic plastic surgery trend isn’t something to encourage. People should not become depressed just because of their looks and expect that their happiness depends on altering what they dislike. Just because celebrities make these decisions does not mean that people should too. Instead of changing, people should learn to love themselves and have confidence. Altering physical features will not do anything to help self-esteem. That is something that only can be gained from themselves and doesn’t rely on anything on the outside.
