Going zero-waste can significantly help the environment and people through the reduction of pollution.

Every day, the average person throws away around 4.4 pounds of trash. This results in one person throwing away around 1606 pounds thrown away in a year. This means millions of tons of waste end up in landfills and the environment each year. With the amount of trash and resources consumed, many negative impacts are affecting this planet. This includes climate change, animal endangerment, and contamination. However, there is a solution that could prevent the planet from getting worse known as zero-waste.

What is zero-waste? To put it in simple words, it is reducing and reusing. The sole goal of this lifestyle is to stop producing trash by living differently. Studies show that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish if people continue to produce this amount of waste daily. Also, waste with toxic chemicals that are thrown into the environment could cause contamination to the soil, air, and water that could even harm humans. Some people who follow a zero-waste lifestyle by only not consuming plastic while others completely remove waste from their life.

Instead of buying regular groceries with packaging, people make their products, shop at special zero-waste stores, or farmers’ markets. Rather than using a plastic bag or disposable water bottle, bringing a reusable container everywhere can help stop all that plastic from being consumed. It could stop pollution, global warming, and many other environmental problems.

Not only does zero-waste help the planet, but there are many side benefits to this. Going zero-waste also ties in with the lifestyle of minimalism. Since many stores sell products with plastic in them or packaging on it, zero-waste helps focus on what is truly needed. It can even save money as it reminds consumers what can be bought versus excess wants. Another advantage of zero-waste is that it helps to eat healthier. There’s only so much that can be bought without packaging. This limits the consumption of junk food which leans more towards produce like fruits and vegetables.

Going zero-waste can significantly help the environment and people. If the majority of people changed to this lifestyle, the world could be a better place for future generations. The more people who stop using plastic could also convince companies to stop using excessive packaging or selling products containing plastic. Even though it may seem like nothing has changed, one person can make a difference. If one person stops using waste, that is a thousand pounds of waste less each year. One person can influence others to help the environment. As the Lorax said in Dr. Suess’s famous book, “Only if someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better…it’s not.”
