There have been 45 commanders in chief of the USA. Next year’s election will consist of 21 different candidates, seventeen Democrats and four Republicans, all hoping to be elected to sit in the Oval Office.

First off, Pete Buttigieg, a 37-year-old, openly-gay, Democratic Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, hopes to become the next president of the United States. He began to train to become a Naval Intelligence Officer at the age of 27, that is a job to help Naval Forces execute their work properly. In 2014, he was deployed to Afghanistan to disrupt terrorists’ money networks. During his time in the military, he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. In 2012, he became the mayor of South Bend, Indiana and still has that job today. Buttigieg is the youngest candidate running in the 2020 election, which might make people turn away from him, but there are a lot of attributes that will help him gain the votes. After the 2016 elections, he wrote an essay counseling Democrats on how to recover from being beaten by the Republicans. Buttigieg also started a long-shot campaign on having people vote for a more youthful profile rather than the old traditional way of a government. In conclusion, Buttigieg is young and has a lot to learn, but will bring his own attributes to the table.

Kamala Harris is a 55-year-old Democratic Senator from California, former attorney general of California and San Francisco district attorney. Harris is hoping to become the next U.S. president and first female United States president. In 2016, Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez and Senator Barbra Boxer to become the United States’ third female senator. Through this election, Harris is well known because she was one of the very few Democrats to gain a position on the Senate after Trump was elected. Since then, Harris has also joined the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Committee on Judiciary and Budget, and the Select Committee on Intelligence. She supports single-payer healthcare system and introduced increased access to outdoor sites and more. She brings star power and history-making potential everywhere.

Last, but not least, Bernie Sanders, the 78-year-old democratic Senator from Vermont. Sanders describes himself as a democratic socialite because of his ability to talk to anyone. Sanders has proposed items such as tuition-free public colleges and Medicare for all. He proposed these items for all the people who don’t have enough money to pay for their health and education. Sanders was the second place for a Democratic president in 2016 behind Hillary Clinton. 1971 was when Bernie Sanders started his political journey as a part of the Liberty Union Party, which came from the anti-war movement. In 1972 and 1976, Sanders ran as the Liberty Union candidate for the Senator of Vermont and as a U.S. candidate in 1972 and 1974. In 2006, Sanders was elected as the Senator from Vermont, but previously he was the mayor of Burlington and was a member of the House of Representatives.

Out of all twenty-one candidates, these three are on the top. Pete Buttigieg because of his past political history and the fact that he is part of the LGBTQ community. Kamala Harris because of her accomplishments to be a part of the U.S. government and actions she takes. Bernie Sanders is one of the top three because of his knowledge on the government and his words on what he thinks is right for the United States.
