Kendrick Lamar is an American rapper who was born in Compton, California, on June 17, 1987. He first started rapping under the name K-Dot when he was 16, and he managed to get the attention of Dr. Dre, who later signed him to Aftermath Entertainment. Kendrick Lamar won the Pulitzer Prize for his album DAMN. in 2018, making it the first rap album to get the prize. He made the entire soundtrack for the Marvel movie Black Panther It was awarded Best Original Score, and the song “King’s Dead” won a Grammy. Kendrick Lamar has gotten 13 Grammy Awards and a lot of other awards, such as MTV awards and BET awards. Many listen to his songs and have heard his name, but who is Kendrick Lamar, and how’d he become who he is today?.  

   Lamar grew up in Compton, and he wrote about a lot of his struggles and the streets. Lamar’s life in Compton was tough. He witnessed a massive amount of gang activity and violence because he lived in Compton, and his dad was part of a gang. He was even homeless at one point. When he was 8, he saw Dr. Dre and 2Pac making the music video for the song “California Love.” Ever since then, he started to listen to rap, and some can say that was where his love of rap started. When he was around 16 or 17, he stopped smoking and drinking so he could focus on his rap career.  

   Kendrick Lamar managed to get the attention of the rap legend Dr. Dre, and he was signed to Aftermath Records. good kid, m.A.A.d. city was Lamar’s first album with Aftermath, and it blew up. After he released the album, he started becoming very famous, and he was nominated for 7 Grammys. While he did not get any of the 7, his music started getting thousands of listens every week and sold lots of albums.

   Lamar won 2 Grammys the next year, and he continues to get more and more Grammys. His song “HUMBLE.” from the album DAMN. is one of the most famous and listened to rap songs ever. It won many Grammys along with the album, which later received the Pulitzer Prize. Winning the Pulitzer Prize is huge for multiple reasons, one of them being that the prize itself is difficult to get. The Pulitzer Prize is also huge because the only other genres of music that have won the award were classical and jazz.  

   Kendrick Lamar is one of the most famous and skilled rappers ever for some of the reasons above, and he continues to make great music and albums. Lamar came from nothing and became one of the greatest rappers of all time, showing dedication and hard work plus changing the rap game itself.
