It’s not a bare white room with no furniture. It’s not having one shirt and one pair of pants that are worn every day. It’s not traveling to many exotic places and meditating. These are just a few of the many misconceptions and stereotypes people place on minimalists. If this is not what a minimalist lifestyle, then what is? Externally, it is about getting rid of belongings and not being materialistic. But minimalism is truly just living a simpler, happier life, and doing things that have the most value by removing any distractions from it. In the present world, people purchase and obtain more and more things thinking that it will fill this void they have inside them. With so many new upgrades and fast fashion, everyone spends trying to fit in. To prevent this, minimalism is a tool to find happiness in things other than tangible items.

The concept of minimalism began in Japan as a culture of the Zen philosophy. Simple living conveyed freedom and truly living people’s best lives. Buddhism and Christianity were two religions that also had some ties to minimalism. People like Buddhist monks and Catholic nuns dedicated their lives to gaining knowledge and spiritual focus. By doing so, they would reduce some of their belongings to not be distracted. Before the minimalist movement became popular present-day, minimalism was often a form of art in the 1960s. It was considered abstract impressionism and modernism. Minimalism is not only visual art but it has also been related to design, fashion, music, etc. Today it is considered both an art movement and a lifestyle that is very popular and in trend.

There are many benefits to starting a minimalist lifestyle. So many people today buy things to complete them little knowing how short-term it is. Minimalism gives them their freedom. Instead of always desiring physical things to impress, minimalism focuses on things like experiences and relationships. One of the ways to begin minimalism is getting rid of things that don’t add value or meaning to a person’s life. Instead of always buying things, minimalists instead can do what they love most and allow themselves to find things that mean so much more to them. Because they do not live with the goal of money, many minimalists often quit their jobs and careers because they don’t have any wants they need money to buy with. People never have the opportunity to do things since they have a job but with minimalism, they can do anything they’ve always wanted to do. With all the time in the world and not worrying about money, this also reduces anxiety and stress helping people be their better and happier selves.

Minimalism is a lifestyle and tool people use in order to simplify their life and make it better. They no longer live a life where they always want things and money. Removing all distractions and stress helps people do what they love and value the most. They can finally live in a more meaningful life and have long-term happiness.
