The holy grail of the Godzilla franchise to most fans, a gracious epic to most general viewers, and rotten tomatoes, a steaming pile of … Well anyways, Godzilla, King of the Monsters stomped its way into theaters on May 31st, 2019. The action-packed monster sequel to Godzilla 2014 and the prequel to it all, Kong Skull Island.

The Godzilla movies have been going on for more than 60 years starting with the first Gojira film in 1954. In 1956 it was released in America with Raymond Burr. It was about the devastation of Japan after Hiroshima and Nagasaki  during World War two. Toho (the company responsible for the first three eras of Godzilla film) envisioned Godzilla to be a force of nature and to represent a living embodiment of the atomic bombs. Later Godzilla would become good and bad on and off again through the three main Toho era films and most recent, Legendary Films. The Toho era films consist of the Showa era films, Heisai era, and Millennium era film.

King of the Monsters’ cast consists of Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe, and Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. The film takes place 5 years after the 2014 film and Godzilla has to face off against a new set of foes and the balance of earth is in his gigantic hands. The monster flick had a budget of about $170-200 and a total box office of $385.9 million. SPOILERS ahead!

The movie begins with the introduction of Emma Russel played by Vera Farmiga and Madison Russell played by Millie Bobby Brown. Emma is a scientist for an organization called Monarch that has the aim to identify and study the “titans” which are the monsters. Her then husband, Mark Russell played by Kyle Chandler got divorced after the events of the 2014 film where their son died leaving Madison as an only child. There is a terrorist group who captures Emma and Madison to release the other titans to create a better world whilst literally EVERYONE ELSE disagrees. They manage to release Ghidorah, the three headed golden dragon, and Rodan, a Lava Pterodactyl. Ghidorah wakes the other monsters with his alpha roar and assumes leadership of the titans. Godzilla doesn’t like this and he and another titan, Mothra fight Ghidorah and Rodan a couple times until Mothra dies and then Godzilla uses Mothra’s energy to overpower and kill Ghidorah where Godzilla truly becomes King of the Monsters.

Overall I would say the movie is a solid eight out of ten in Its picture, cast, and script.
