The poster of Walt Disney's live-action remake, Aladdin.

The 1992 Disney classic, Aladdin, has recently been remade as a live action movie. As it was a big part of people’s’ childhoods, the movie was hyped up and had many waiting excitedly for the movie. However, the movie has been met with mixed reviews with some pleased with the movie and others being disappointed.

The live-action Aladdin, basically follows the same storyline as the original. It starts off by introducing the street urchin and thief Aladdin, who meets Princess Jasmine, the daughter of the Sultan of Agrabah. As Aladdin goes to meet her at the palace, he is captured and taken by the evil sorcerer Jafar, who promises him riches beyond imagination in exchange for a lamp from the Cave of Wonders. Aladdin goes and gets the lamp, but finds out that the lamp is a magical one with a genie that will grant him three wishes. He decides to keep the lamp and becomes friends with the genie. However, they soon embark on a mission to protect Princess Jasmine and the kingdom of Agrabah from the evil sorcerer Jafar.

Aladdin has been considered a disappointment for many as it lacks the same magic of the original Aladdin. However, others believe that the movie was in fact quite good because of the interesting leads and strong soundtracks. This was shown when Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott were complimented for their strong chemistry and appeal as the main characters. In addition, both Scott and Naomi proved themselves to be great singers through songs such as Speechless and shared songs such as A Whole New World, which were both executed in a fine fashion. The soundtrack for Aladdin, which featured artists such as DJ Khaled, was also praised.

Although the leads and soundtrack received positive feedback, other parts of the movie received negative reviews. Many critics have said that Aladdin has been lackluster at best and that the magic of the original was not captured by the new live-action one. One of the main reasons for this is the portrayal of the genie. Although Will Smith did a terrific job, the bar set by Robin Williams was too high. Able to make various voices, Williams made the movie much more entertaining. In addition, the director, Guy Ritchie, did not have much experience with musical, making the film a bit disappointing.

All in all, Aladdin may be a disappointing to those who expected the same quality of the original, but overall it was a fun and family-friendly movie for others.
