Benedict Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976, in London, England. Cumberbatch was born to Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham who were well-known television actors at the time. Even though they had the status of actors, they did not want Cumberbatch to be on stage and they instead sent him to Harrow Public School. At first, Cumberbatch was highly interested in rugby and art but eventually, theater captured his attention. Cumberbatch’s very first acting role was Titania in the play A Midsummer’s Night Dream. When he left Harrow, he taught English in Tibet for around a year then he studied drama at the University of Manchester. After he graduated, Benedict spent an entire year at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Two of Cumberbatch’s most recognized roles are Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock and Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His role as Sherlock is what gave himself stardom and many people started to know his name. This role even got Cumberbatch an Emmy Award for the third season of the show. At first, Cumberbatch didn’t really want to star as Sherlock as he thought that the show would be cheap and poorly made. However, when he found out about the effort and money being put into it, he was convinced that it would be an actually decent show. Another role that he is well known for is the dragon Smaug from The Hobbit movie series. So far, he has received many stages and screen acting awards and even received Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Currently, Benedict is in the process of filming Avengers: Endgame which will be part two of Avengers: Infinity War.

When he was at the University of Manchester, Cumberbatch dated Olivia Poulet for many years but in 2011, they broke up. In November of the year 2014, Cumberbatch became engaged to Sophie Hunter and on February 14, 2015, they got married. On June, their first son Christopher Carlton was born and two years later, their second son Hal Auden was born. According to Ancestry.com, Cumberbatch is actually a distant relative to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who is the person who created Sherlock Holmes, and they are sixteenth cousins twice removed. Another link was when he played as the mathematician Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and Cumberbatch is Alan’s seventeenth cousin.

Overall, Benedict Cumberbatch has a rich history and he is now an actor that is loved worldwide.
