op.60The Westminster Dog Show is a very serious competition for dogs, consisting of seven categories, but one small dog did not take this challenge very seriously at all. A Bichon Frise named Periwinkle, or better known as Winky, stole the spotlight from the fast-timing dogs and very accurately won her title as a show dog. There are seven categories in dog shows, and one particular small dog received cheers from a large crowd. She wasn’t cheered on in the way that all the other dogs were and not in the way she should’ve been cheered on. The object of the long-running competition is to get the shortest time possible while running through tunnels and over obstacles.

Some dogs going before Winky got the crowd going with their fast times. Rudy, a bulldog, ran the course in 46.63 seconds. A border collie Verb beat this time with 32.05 seconds. These times may seem long, but for dogs, they are astounding. One area of competition takes thousands of dollars and many years for training. Only the best of the best dogs can join the Westminster show dogs. Some people might even question how Winky was able to enter the dog show, but the crowd wouldn’t think twice about it after the laugh she provided.

Winky decided that she was going to stop in the middle of the dog walk to soak in the cheers from the crowd. That got her some attention, but then Winky skipped tubes and tunnels while the crowd filmed and posted online. The audience loved her and laughed. Not only did Winky ignore lots of the obstacles, she even stayed at the top of an A-frame, which looks like leaning two playing cards against each other. She stopped at the top of the frame and looked out into the crowd. Winky is now often referred to as the “new spirit animal for going slow.” Her owner Joanne Ouchterloney was dumbfounded as to why Winky wasn’t completing the course as trained. Joanne had been training Bichon Frises for fifteen years, and this had never happened before. What surprised Joanne, even more, is that Winky had competed in the Westminster Dog Show before and had completed the course correctly.

With all of the distractions of the crowd and her skipping the obstacles, Winky earned a time of 192 seconds and 92 mistakes total. She didn’t receive the blue ribbon, but she won the crowd. Little did she know that she was going viral within the minute and soon everyone would recognize her. Who knew a lack of training could have such hilarious results?
