A staple in any Korean cuisine, kimchi is a necessity for all Koreans. The beloved spicy, delicious side dish has been on the table of Koreans for hundreds of years. However, it may be time for kimchi to become a regular dish for all people. Various studies and tests have shown that kimchi provides various vitamins and helpful bacteria that makes it very healthy and beneficial when consumed. So, the question arises, what is kimchi?

There are many different varieties of kimchi, but the most common one is the one made with napa cabbage and spices such as chili powder. Other types of kimchi are cabbage kimchi, radish kimchi, and cucumber kimchi. When kimchi is made, other vegetables are often inserted and fermented in the kimchi marinade. Radishes, onions, and garlic are commonly used. Kimchi can be a little spicy to some as it has red chili powder, but fortunately, there are types of kimchi made without chili powder.

Believe it or not, kimchi is actually a simple dish to make. The only thing is that it takes a long time to make. The ingredients one needs to make napa kimchi are napa cabbage, garlic cloves, radishes, salt, sugar, and red pepper flakes. These are the very basic ingredients and one can enhance the flavor of the kimchi by adding in additional ingredients such as pears or abalone. First, one must wash the cabbage and let it soak in salt water for a night. Next, one must drain the water and begin working on the marinade. The marinade should be a mixture of water, sugar, and red chili powder. Then, add the mixture to the salted cabbage making sure to distribute it evenly. Finally, let the kimchi ferment by placing it in direct sunlight for 24 hours.

Kimchi can be eaten in various ways and is also very healthy, which is another reason why people should try it. It can be eaten on its own or be added to rice, noodles, or stews. Some people even eat kimchi in wraps and pitas. There are many benefits to eating kimchi. Kimchi is a low fat, low-calorie dish that contains many vitamins and nutrients. It can help with weight loss, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure. When consumed, kimchi can help with ones’ health.

All in all, kimchi has many positive attributes that make it good for all people. It is easy to make, healthy, flexible, and can be made to suit one’s taste.
